Portfellow

Negative balance is not allowed

When importing or creating transactions, you may encounter an error message stating: “Negative balance is not allowed.” This means that applying the transaction would cause your investment balance to go negative, which Portfellow does not permit as we do not support short selling. If you are not attempting to enter a short sale, please check the following:

  • Check earlier transactions. Are any earlier buy transactions missing?
  • Check for missing stock splits. Are any stock split transactions missing? Read how to record a split.
  • Check opening balance. If you have an opening balance transaction, is the amount correctly defined?
  • Check order of transactions. Are you importing or creating transactions in the correct order?
  • Check Transaction Dates. Ensure that the transaction dates are correct, as incorrect dates can affect the sequence and result in a negative balance.
  • Verify Security Identifiers. Double-check that you are using the correct security identifiers (like ticker symbols or ISINs) to ensure transactions are applied to the right investments.
  • Check for Duplicate Transactions. Ensure that no transactions have been accidentally duplicated, as this could result in an erroneous negative balance.
